The hitchhiker accepts despite knowing nothing about sailing. As the sailing trip progresses, the antagonism between the two men begins to increase again, fueled on both sides as each strives to be the alpha male. In the morning, they meet at the shore the husband of course didn't have enough courage to go the police, he's making excuses that it was in the night, he was almost naked, couldn't get into the car - the keys were on the yacht.
And the car remains there, so we don't know which way he chooses Considering I think Chris speaks Polish, I am sure he is right. However, many older films exist in multiple versions and translations and I think the version I saw was mistranslated.
As a result, I am adding this addendum to clarify things. Roman Polanski's first feature-length movie is this Polish effort, set almost entirely on a yacht. It's a three-hander about a vacationing couple whose lives are interrupted by the arrival of a mysterious hitchhiker and the drama that follows. Seen today, it's very much a predecessor of the famous psycho-thriller as popularised by the likes of DEAD CALM, although the thriller aspects are much less overt here. This plays out as more of a psychological drama exploring the relationships between the main players and how a kind of unsaid, unseen power struggle plays out.
The performances are naturalistic and engaging and the direction is strong enough to keep you engaged despite the lack of incident. He picks up a hitchhiker Zygmunt Malanowicz in anger. They invite him on their yacht. The young man carries a large knife and flirts with Krystyna.
He starts competing against the domineering Andrzej. He claims not to be able to swim. He likes to spread the fingers and play with the knife in between the fingers. Andrzej steals his knife and it falls overboard as Andrzej carelessly throws it to him.
They fight and he falls overboard too. It's an impressive feature length directorial debut for Roman Polanski. The boat is pretty small which probably made filming very difficult. The movie has a good amount tension throughout. I would have liked for the movie to start more gently and climax with something more dramatically. Basically the movie starts off tense with the couple and stays at that level for most of the movie.
A better build of tension would take this movie from good to great. Goofs When the young boy is trying to stabilize the Christine by hanging off its side, the railing of the camera boat can be seen in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. Quotes Krystyna : [Speaking to the young man, comparing him with her husband] You're just like him Connections Edited into Spisok korabley User reviews Review.
Top review. Nature created neither servants nor masters. WELL,you can defined this great film just by one particular scene: the old man is rich, have good social position and took the boy on board to play the role of his mentor. The guy was always playing the knife between his fingers and the old man was jealous about that.
So when the boy went inside the yacht leaving the knife, the old man took the knife and tried to do the same. Suddenly the young appear and saw this. The only way for the old man to get away with some honour was to allow the boy do the play:he played the knife between the old man's fingers, looking straight into his eyes.
Well the lady at the same time was swimming using a funny rubber cocodrile. So, imagine this beautiful scene with the knife, all the tension and suddenly we hear the woman shouting:'Andrzej, Andrzej, the cocodrile is making the bubbles',huh, when I was in the cinema the whole audience burst laughting after hearing that!.
The woman stays in the background, just think why? There's another great funny shot when the woman lays there for a sunbathe with her small bikinis, well, her breast dominates the scene!. Zygmunt Malanowicz, the actor who played the part of the young man said that he practice a lotnfor those scenes, polanski was afraid if he was prcticing long enough, finally everything was Ok. As Leon Niemczyc, the actor who played the mature role said" Malanowicz only gave me sligh scars'.
The idea of the film was the strange competition between this two men. Polanski said he needed a actress that looked plain and normal in ordinary dress but intriguing in bikini!.
